Scar Removal Q and A
Who is a good candidate for laser scar removal?
Candidates for laser scar removal can include nearly anyone who is troubled by scars on their face or body. Certain types of scars such as acne scars, surgical scars, or other flat types of scars, are best suited for this type of treatment. Keloid scars — the scars that are highly raised off the skin — are usually not good candidates for laser scar removal. Lighter skin tones usually respond best to laser removal, but treatment can be customized for even darker skin tones in some cases. If you’re unsure whether you’re a good candidate to have your scar removed by laser, please contact San Pedro Laser Center, and we’ll be glad to set up a consultation for you.
What does laser scar removal feel like?
Laser scar removal is generally not painful thanks to the Advanced Contact Cooling™ that’s part of the ICON laser system. Heat from the laser is offset by immediate cooling, making the process quite tolerable for most patients.
How does laser scar removal work?
The ICON laser emits fractional laser light that targets the scar tissue to cause a breakdown of that tissue. The scar tissue fragments are then absorbed back into the body to be eliminated through the body’s normal elimination processes.
How many treatments are needed?
Most patients need four to eight treatment sessions in total, but this does vary by individual. San Pedro Laser Center is happy to arrange a consultation for you so they can create a custom treatment plan based on your specific scars. Each treatment session is quite short, usually 30 minutes or less.
What can you expect after treatment?
Post treatment, you may notice some redness, similar to a mild sunburn, in the treatment area. A small amount of swelling may also occur. This usually resolves in 24 hours or less. Most patients need no downtime at all before resuming their usual routine.
